Difficulty

This itinerary is considered moderate to challenging, primarily due to varying terrain and distances. Riders will experience a mix of dirt roads, gravel paths, and paved roads, with some rugged sections, particularly
between Lake Natron and Karatu. While the distances between locations are manageable, the terrain can be uneven, and the roads can be bumpy. The ride through the Ngorongoro Highlands and Maasai areas will be particularly scenic but may involve more technical riding, especially in areas with loose gravel and uneven surfaces.

Climate

The weather varies depending on the time of year. Tanzania experiences distinct dry and rainy seasons, with the dry season lasting from June to October and the rainy season from March to May. In the dry season, temperatures will generally be warm during the day, reaching highs of 25°C to 35°C (77°F to 95°F), with cooler evenings and nights, particularly in the highlands. During the rainy season, expect occasional showers with temperatures ranging from 18°C to 30°C (64°F to 86°F). Rain showers can be brief but intense, making dirt trails slippery

Accommodations

The accommodations offer a range of options to suit different preferences, including both camping and lodge experiences. The camping options provide a more rustic, budget-friendly stay, allowing guests to enjoy the outdoors and connect with nature. For those seeking more comfort, the lodge accommodations offer cozy, well equipped rooms in peaceful and scenic settings. The lodges blend nature with comfort, providing a relaxing environment to unwind after a day of exploring. All accommodations emphasize local culture and the surrounding landscapes.

Clothing

For clothing, it’s recommended to pack lightweight, breathable clothing suitable for warm temperatures during the day, while also bringing warmer layers for the cooler evenings, especially at higher elevations like Simba Farms and the Ngorongoro Highlands. A light rain jacket is essential, particularly if traveling during the rainy season, as brief showers are common. Full protective riding gear is important for safety, including long sleeves and pants to protect against the sun and dust. Comfortable hiking shoes, swimwear for hot springs or lakes, and essentials like sunscreen and sunglasses are also advised for the various activities along the route.
